How It Works

saohuMany students are facing new challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. With classes being delivered online through the summer, some students are struggling with technology needs such as access to Wi-Fi and new software requirements, while others have lost income from work stoppages.

saohuIntended as short-term relief, the Cougar Emergency Fund can help students pay for expenses that would otherwise force them to drop out of the University of Houston.

These expenses may include:

  • Costs related to loss of wages (past due utilities, unpaid rent, childcare)
  • Medical expenses
  • Food
  • Housing (deposits, unexpected moving expenses and emergency lodging)
  • Utilities (application, initiation and deposit fees)
  • Technology (internet costs, increased data needs, software)
  • Tuition assistance (including summer sessions)
  • Course materials (textbooks and other required materials)

saohuEligible students include currently-enrolled undergraduate or graduate students who are in good standing, with priority given to those enrolled full time.

The Cougar Emergency Fund is housed in the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services, and it is administered through the Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid.

How You Can Help

Your support can help the University of Houston to once again help in-need students by contributing to the Cougar Emergency Fund.

The Cougar Emergency Fund is supported by private donations from alumni and friends. Donations to this fund are tax deductible.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, every dollar donated to the Cougar Emergency Fund will be doubled through the "Here, We Go" Matching Fund, sponsored by the UH Foundation and its James Wade Rockwell Endowment. This transformative matching contribution will be made up to $500,000.
